Day #32 June 22 Sarria to Portomarín (23K)
We left Sarria with the droves of pilgrims who started their Camino there. It seemed like there were thousands. I was glad we were able to reserve a room in Portomarín, it took the pressure off having to arrive early. Even though this was a manageable stage we did not want to rush. After a leisurely breakfast we took some photos of the Corpus Christi preparations & then set out. We more or less ambled & got to Portomarín at around 5 pm, We had several stops along the way & encountered several tough hills. This stage was about things we saw along the way as the photos will show. I have to admit I'm glad we started our Camino St. Jean Pied de Port. I would not feel as satisfied stating at Sarria.
It was so easy to recognize those starting at Sarria. (The Newbies as Greg says.) They had new gear and clean shoes. I've tried to capture this in a limerick
The newbies are easy to spot
By all the new gear that they've got
New hats & new poles
Their shoes with clean soles
From St Jean Pied de port, I think not
We had a great night in Portomarín. We met up with Greg, Chris & the gang. They had been swimming in the river Rio Miño a fabulous river which we crossed on our way into Portomarín. We had dinner with Scott & Kevin which was as entertaining as usual. Scott & Kevin are great fun & of course we had a Baileys. Scott became a little philosophical asking each of us " what was the biggest surprise for us on Camino ". The answers were varied and as I said before "what happens on Camino, stays on Camino" but Scott deserves honourable mention for several reasons but particularly for his approach to the O'Cebreiro climb.
For Scott t'was a matter of course
For him there can be no remorse
Despite two bad knees
The odd sniffle & sneeze
He's the Man we all like to call horse
Great photos of all the crazy wonderful things one sees on the Camino. The pic of the shoes is especially telling. :-) I love the limerick about the newbies!
