Day # 25 June San Martín del Camino to Astorga (25k)
We got an early start this morning because we were somewhat anxious to get out of Santa Ana, the albergue in San Martín del la Camino. The reason we wanted to ''get out" is because it smelled; something the guides cannot tell. I feel a sense of responsibility to let people know so here goes in a limerick
The guide to Camino won't tell
Things albergues may not do well
Santa Ana you should know
In San Martin del Camino
Is a place with a horrible smell
As we travelled the Camino over the past three weeks we were in no doubt that some pilgrims "do'' the Camino on horseback and not because we saw lots (saw our first yesterday) , because we saw lots of "evidence" that horses had been about. I've tried to capture this and how "Royal" these pilgrims look in the following limerick.
The Peregrino took his horse & he rode
From the albergue his recent abode
He looked Regal & Royal
But this image did spoil
When his horse dropped a load on the road.
We were on the road as the sun rose. The temperature was perfect for walking and we did not expect the blistering (Oops there's that word again) heat of the past couple of days. We made remarkable time... Frances was "flying". We stopped for our 2nd breakfast in Hospital de Orbigo. We met Kevin from down-under and Scott from Atlanta. Fran had a picture with the" boys".
There were some wonderful examples of Architect along the way but we see so much so often it is easy to get complacent.
We reached Astorga before 2pm and have had lots of time to explore. This is a fabulous place and despite "extensive" exploration on our part we still have seen so little.
We had a craving for something familiar so we had a hamburger, chips & a bottle of red wine... it was just great. Frances chose a really nice wine so now I'm a wee bit sleepy. That's probably it for tonight!
